About the Item
Vivid and highly graphic, this gouache painting served as a maquette for a proposed poster promoting vacation travel on the Great Western Railway in England, which linked London with Wales and a wide swath of south and west England. The artist -- P. Clark -- uses brilliant blue and yellow hues to contrast the train crossing an arched bridge -- its smoky plume merging with the clouds above -- with the sailboat and waterway below. The Railway survived until the late 1940s, when it was nationalized and became part of British Railways. The medium is gouache on heavy paper, and the artist's name is affixed to the lower edge of the painting.
