Late 19th-Century Italian Pen-Work Intarsia Plaque
Signed Gargiulo (Sorrento, Italy, 1843–1912)
A finely crafted late 19th-century Italian pen work, intarsia, ebony, and stained fruitwood marquetry plaque, depicting a young girl carrying a basket on her head and a scale over her shoulder as she heads to market, dressed in the traditional regional costume of the period. Executed in the celebrated Sorrento marquetry tradition, the composition showcases expert use of contrasting woods, delicate engraved line work, and nuanced tonal shading, resulting in a richly detailed pictorial scene.
The plaque is signed “GARGIULO,” identifying an artisan active in Sorrento (1843–1912) renowned for producing highly detailed narrative marquetry panels for the late 19th-century Grand Tour market.
