About the Item

Portrait of a lady with a red shawl, oil on canvas executed by Jacob Ferdinand Voet (1639-1700). The work is accompanied by the critical file edited by Prof. Francesco Petrucci prepared in 2022, an excerpt of which is given below. The painting, which we call Portrait of a Lady with a Red Shawl, shows a concise, essential and compendious execution, with broad, loose brushstrokes, presenting itself almost in a sketchy or unfinished state. The hair, gathered and less fluffy, is free and natural, with wavy and curled locks of hair on the forehead. The broadly pleated brown robe is edged with a lace shirt, while a red shawl is gathered under the shoulders, held by the right hand. The hairstyle and clothing justifies a execution of the painting in the second half of the 1770s, probably being originally part of some dismembered "Gallery of the Beautiful." The figure's placement in an oval frame, on the other hand, is certainly later, perhaps from the early 1700s, following a French-influenced collecting and staging fashion. The painting was therefore originally intended to be rectangular in format, like the portraits in the Gallery of the Belles of Masino Castle, executed in France around 1685-89 but later reduced to an oval. The painting is on first canvas. Measurements with frame : 71.50 cm x 61.50 cm Measurements without frame: 60 cm x 70 cm
