Jan Frans van Bloemen, called Orizzonte (Antwerp, 1662 – Rome, 1749) A Late 17th–Early 18th Century Italian Landscape with Figures of the Roman Campagna Jan Frans van Bloemen, known by his Italian nickname “Orizzonte” (“horizon”), was a Flemish painter celebrated for his luminous views of the Roman Campagna. Born in Antwerp on 12 May 1662, he trained under Anton Goubau before traveling through Paris, Lyon, and Turin, eventually settling in Rome, where he remained for the rest of his life. There, he joined the Bentvueghels—a society of Dutch and Flemish artists—and later became a member of both the Schildersbent and the Accademia di San Luca. Van Bloemen gained great renown for his idealized landscapes bathed in soft, golden light, reflecting the influence of Claude Lorrain and Gaspard Dughet. His works often feature pastoral figures and classical ruins set within the expansive vistas of the Italian countryside, evoking an atmosphere of serene timelessness.
