Shokan Ohchi, born in 1882 (Meiji 15) and passing away in 1958 (Showa 33), also known by his real name Kouichi and alternate name Erakudo, hailed from Ehime Prefecture. A graduate of the Tokyo School of Fine Arts, he studied under the tutelage of Yokoyama Taikan at the Japan Art Institute Doujin. Following his graduation, Ohchi served in the Russo-Japanese War in 1902. Upon demobilization, he actively participated in prestigious exhibitions, including the Japan Bijutsuin Exhibition. His artistic journey led him to showcase "Choyu" at the first Reconstruction Inn Exhibition in 1914, earning him recognition at the Inten Exhibition.
In 1930, Ohchi accompanied Yokoyama Taikan to the Japan Art Exhibition in Rome, marking a significant chapter in his career. His contributions continued post-war, serving as a judge for the Shinbunten in 1939 and later as a counselor at the Nitten. While his early works displayed a flexible drawing style influenced by Taikan, his later years saw the development of a distinct pale and neat painting style.
The artwork at hand skillfully portrays a "snowy mountain" on silk, housed in a double box. The paper, despite minor stains, remains in good condition, as does the cover, adorned with small stains and wrinkles.
