A small round abstract Minimalist acrylic painting by San Francisco artist Jean Hyson (b. 1934) titled “The Foundation”. One of two works from the artist’s 1969 series of futuristic-looking round paintings that we currently offer, the other being an extra-large work titled “The Light Sown”. Striking example of post-painterly abstraction from early in that artistic movement. Confident and crisp hard-edge style and cool color palette defies easy dating while emitting strong vaporwave aesthetic vibes. Two-tone azure ground frames a white window with periwinkle cloud-like forms. Glowing fluorescent red accent with subdued multi-color pinstriping and dripped teal details. Signed on recto at 5 o’clock position. Signed, titled, and annotated on verso. Floats away from wall within original clear acrylic custom frame. Jean Hyson and her then-husband Jacques Fabert (who typically painted under the name “Jean Faber Himbert”) were an important force within the midcentury San Francisco art scene. Her work has been featured in countless Bay Area gallery and museum exhibitions—including SFMOMA, the de Young, and the Legion of Honor—and is in numerous public and private collections. In a fantastic in-depth interview with Hilda Pertha for the December 1970 issue of WESTART, Hyson gave her passionate take on the nascent women’s liberation movement and the positive effect she hopes it will have for female artists: “If women artists were given the respect male artists have, I feel what they could do would produce fabulous fantastic giants in the art field…A woman has to be able to dream. And the male world has placed limitations on her dreams. This is why it is wrong! I see a future where females will be encouraged to seek the same educational opportunities as males—to train as composers, surgeons, physicists, artists, politicians. To set a goal the same as the male—to become a senator, Supreme Court Justice, president of the USA! And not do it part-time while being a ‘housewife’ any more than the male does it part-time being a ‘househusband’—but full-time, because these goals take full-time concentration and attention.”

Wear consistent with age and use. Art in great vintage condition with no issues. A bit of dust between canvas and frame at bottom. Frame with a few tiny marks and a couple small duller spots on right. Additional photos including in varied lighting conditions provided upon request.
