About the Item

Jens Birkemose, Denmark. Oil on paper. Composition with bird motif. A vibrant and dreamlike composition where figurative suggestions and abstract forms merge. The work balances between spontaneity and control: blue and red brushstrokes seem to form human figures, while yellow and light blue tones open the picture surface toward a bird motif on the right side. The division of the composition and the lyrical play of colors make this piece a characteristic example of Birkemose’s artistic language from the mid-1970s. Visual size: H. 9.5 cm, W. 16,5 cm Frame: H. 24 cm, W. 28 cm Signature / date: Signed “Jens Birkemose” and dated 1975 Condition: Good condition Jens Birkemose (1943–2013) was a Danish painter, graphic artist, and sculptor, educated at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and later at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He worked in the intersection between abstraction and surrealism, often with symbolic figures, musical references, and a strong colorist expression. His works are represented in the collections of the National Gallery of Denmark (SMK), ARoS, and several international museums.

Peter Robert Keil was born to an artist blacksmith father whom he lost very early in his childhood during the Second World War. During the end phase of the war, Keil's mother, also an artistically talented woman, took her son and struggled her way to West Berlin where they settled. This is where Peter Robert Keil grew up in the working-class neighborhood of Berlin-Wedding and where he discovered his interest in painting – particularly in expressionistic artists and in Pablo Picasso's work. From 1954 on, the East Berlin-based painter Otto Nagel...
