About the Item
Joe Brainard (1942–1994) Untitled (Nude Male in Shower) unique mixed media, from his matchbook cover series - mid 1970s. Male nude in shower, tub with blue shower curtain. Framed in a 5" x 5" frame. Image size 1.63" x 2". On verso Untitled by Joe Brainard - brother of James and John. Former St. Louis Collection, his brother James has lived in St. Louis since 1964.
Writer and artist Joe Brainard is widely associated with the New York School. His body of work includes assemblages, collages, drawing, painting, book designs, album covers, theatre set and costumes. Brainard is perhaps best known for introducing comics as a poetic medium. His first solo exhibition was held in 1965 at The Alan Gallery, New York, and since then his work has been included in numerous group exhibitions, including those at the Museum of Modern Art, The Whitney Museum of American Art and the Corcoran Gallery of Art. Brainard died in 1994 of AIDS-induced pneumonia.
