A striking and scarce midcentury framed Abstract serigraph titled “Broken Red”, by acclaimed Hollywood art director and listed artist John Otterson. John Edward (Jack) Otterson (b. 1905–1991) was an American art director nominated for eight Academy Awards over the course of a career that spanned 300 films from 1934 to 1953. He was also an extremely talented and very versatile painter and artist, as this visually impactful signed titled serigraph attests. As an artist, Otterson worked primarily in oil or acrylic with an Impressionist style. That makes this piece all the more uncommon and desirable: an Abstract serigraph with a torn paper, collage-like aesthetic, featuring rough-edged overlapping forms of solid black and semi-opaque red on a white ground. The only other example that we can find by the artist in the same style and medium is a complementary 1953 serigraph in blue titled “Broken Black”. Titled, numbered (“E10”), and signed in pencil by the artist along bottom margin. Presented in original brass finish metal frame with black mat under glass. Sight is H 25.25 in. x W 20.25 in.; overall dimensions are listed below. An interesting bit of trivia: Otterson’s 1939 Impressionist painting of vases is a memorable element of the iconic set design for Frasier Crane’s condo on the 1993–2004 television series “Frasier”, and can be glimpsed at some point in every episode of the show’s run.

Condition:
Wear consistent with age and use. Art is in great vintage condition. Has a curious small grey scribble (possibly in pencil) near the lower left, dating from the time of the piece’s creation. Frame has a few very light signs of superficial wear.
