About the Item

A quite oddly alluring and strikingly engaging original surrealist painting by American/Mexican artist Jonathan Barbieri. The work of a young man in a strange pose staring intensely back at the viewer appears to be an early incarnation of his larger oil on canvas work "Magic Boy". The use of negative space to focus the viewer's attention on the boy's steadfast gaze and brilliant colors are really quite amazing. The work is pencil signed and dated (1992) by the artist along the lower margin. Barbieri was born in Washington D.C. in 1955. In the 1980s he emigrated to Mexico where he has lived and worked ever since - mostly in and around the magical town of Oaxaca. His paintings and drawings are in numerous public and private collections throughout Mexico, Europe and the United States. This piece would be a great addition to any collectors of his work or make for an eye catching stand alone accent artwork piece in about any setting. It is nicely framed and ready to display. José Luis Cuevas was a prominent member of the Generación de la Ruptura (Breakaway Generation), who first challenged the then dominant Mexican muralism movement. He remains a distinguished and controversial artist who is known for depicting the darker side of life and the debasement of the human society with often shocking images. He is also known for being an advocate against creating art purely for commercial gain.
