About the Item

Jungfrau Massif - H. Heinen Technical information: Period: early 1900s Author: H. Heinen Technique: Oil on panel Dimensions: 61 cm x 85 cm (without frame) - 75 cm x 99 cm with antique fir frame. Description: Oil painting dating to the early decades of the twentieth century, depicting a view of the Jungfrau massif, one of the most iconic peaks of the Bernese Alps. The work is executed on panel, as suggested by the vertical texture visible in the background, and features energetic brushwork with dense and well-defined strokes, typical of late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Alpine painting. The artist structures the composition with a clear and theatrical sense of perspective: in the foreground rises a grassy hill, shaped with touches of bright green and warm ochre, upon which stands a small alpine chalet, rendered with few but precise brushstrokes that establish its presence as the human focal point within the vast landscape. A line of dark fir trees guides the viewer's gaze toward the monumentality of the mountain range. The mountain occupies the entire background and dominates the scene with strong plastic force. The rocky surfaces are conveyed through violet, brown, and pinkish accents, while the snowy areas and glaciers descend in a fan-like pattern with thicker, more luminous material-almost sculptural-capturing the light of the clear sky. The treatment of the snow, rich in impasto, recalls the Central European painting tradition of the same period, with a taste for the contrast between shadow and brilliance. The clear, vertical light creates a broad atmospheric effect: the bright blue sky underscores the majesty of the summit, while the lower portion of the mountain remains more shaded, enhancing the impression of scale and depth.
