About the Item

A large size English late 19th century framed pastoral oil painting depicting cattle, sheep and goat in a landscape. The center of the composition is occupied by a brown cow that is proudly standing on the luscious green grass and seems to be looking at us, thus drawing us into the scene. The herd, made of a black bull surrounded by two other cows, is accompanied by sheep that are peacefully grazing. The brown and white goat on the right side is gingerly walking in a refreshing stream, and leading our eye to the foggy green hills of the background where other sheep are scattered. The subtle green and blue palette of the background highlights the richness of the coat of the animals. The artist who created this piece belonged to the circle of 19th century British artist William Sidney Cooper. The painting is set within a giltwood frame, adorned with shells and floral motifs. With its countryside scene, delicate execution and serene subject, this English 1880s painting will accent any wall beautifully.
