Large and Impressive Victorian Oil Portrait by W.R. Waters, 1877 A grand-scale mid-Victorian oil on canvas portrait of a seated lady, painted by British artist W.R. Waters and signed and dated 1877 lower left. The sitter is elegantly dressed in a black gown with lace bonnet and jewellery, seated beside a table with books. The artist captures both the dignity and presence of the subject, with careful attention to the textures of fabric, lace, and accessories. Housed in a richly ornamented period gilt frame which enhances the work’s imposing presence. Overall dimensions (framed): 97.5 cm x 118 cm (38 3/8 in x 46 1/2 in) Condition: Good. Light surface craquelure and minor age-related marks to paint; small areas of wear to the frame, all consistent with age. Ready to hang. This is a fine example of a Victorian society portrait of impressive scale, ideal for a grand interior, period property, or discerning portrait collection.
