About the Item
A splendid late 19th century oil on canvas portrait of an official of the “Ordre des Palmes Académiques” signed and dated (1897) in the upper right hand corner by the artist “H Herbert” (Henry Herbert La Thangue, 1859-1929). Herbert was in fact a British painter, born in Croydon and studying initially at the Lambeth School of Art, then later at The Royal Academy (1874-9), where he was awarded a gold medal, enabling him to study at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris for three years. The “Ordre des Palmes Académiques” is a national order bestowed by the French Republic on distinguished academics and teachers and for valuable service to universities, education and science. It was originally established in 1808 by Emperor Napoleon as a decoration to honour eminent members of the University of Paris, so the subject of this painting can be assumed to be an eminent personage of the time. The portrait is contained within a decorative giltwood and moulded stucco frame, incorporating designs of laurel, oak and water leaves. There are some small imperfections visible.
