About the Item
Oil on canvas, Jan Spronk (1962) - Staande Vrouw (''Standing Woman'')
This exceptionally large oil painting, created by the Dutch artist Jan Spronk (1920–1970), is a work that immediately arrests the eye. At first glance, one might mistake it for an immense stained-glass window - its lattice of lines and radiant blocks of colour glowing as though lit from within. What unfolds is a tapestry of geometry and emotion intertwined, a figure suggested through shifting planes, intersecting structures, and a symphony of vibrant hues.
Painted in Spronk’s abstract period, the work showcases the bold visual language for which he became known: powerful colour contrasts, expressive structural grids, and a sense of rhythm that moves across the surface like music. Spronk, who worked not only as a painter but also as a ceramist, sculptor, monotype maker, and jewelry designer, brought a multidisciplinary sensitivity to his art. Influences of Cubism echo through the fractured geometry, while his fascination with primal forms and expressive abstraction gives the piece its emotional charge. His work can be found in museums such as the Gemeentemuseum Arnhem and the Van Reekum Museum Apeldoorn.
4 Years after Jan Spronk passed away in 1970, the artist’s widow exhibited it at the Van Reekum Museum in Apeldoorn (1974) - this detail is noted on the reverse of the canvas. Today the painting remains in beautiful condition, its pigments rich, its surface alive.
With its imposing scale - 173 by 117 centimeters on canvas, 175 by 119 centimeters framed - this painting has the power to transform any space. It does not simply hang on a wall; it becomes part of the architecture. The interplay of reds, pinks, blues, ochres, and luminous yellows shifts throughout the day, responding to changes in light. Whether placed in a minimalist interior or among collectors’ pieces, it commands attention and shapes the atmosphere around it: warm, expressive, dynamic.
