"Guardian of the Mediterranean": Mid-19th Century Folk Painting of Valletta Harbour A large and lively Anglo-Maltese folk painting (oil on canvas) dating to the mid-19th century, capturing a panoramic view of the Grand Harbour in Valletta, Malta. Painted from the vantage point of the upper gardens (likely the Upper Barrakka Gardens) overlooking the harbor, the work illustrates the formidable fortifications that made this island the strategic home base of the British Mediterranean Fleet. The scene is bustling with maritime activity: the deep-water berths are occupied by numerous Royal Navy vessels, including transitional steam-and-sail warships and a troopship, while smaller local craft ply the waters between them. The foreground offers a charming glimpse into colonial life, featuring figures strolling along the terrace fortifications, including a soldier in a red tunic (standing guard) and ladies in period dress, observing the fleet below.
