About the Item

A striking gouache painting on canvas titled "O Rapazinho do Gato" (The Little Boy With the Cat) by Henrique Medina, signed and dated 1961, Portugsal. This early study of one of Medina’s iconic works, featuring a young boy with a cat, is presented with a rich frame, adding authenticity to this beautiful piece. Henrique Medina de Barros, one of Portugal’s greatest portrait painters, was born in Porto in 1901 and passed away in 1988. After suspending his studies at the Fine Arts School of Porto (Escola Superior de Belas Artes do Porto) in 1919, he pursued further education under Cormon and Bérard while studying in Paris. In the period of Modernism, Medina initially engaged in academic painting, but eventually veered towards becoming a highly acclaimed portraitist who gained worldwide recognition. Having lived in London for ten years, he later journeyed to Rome, where he crafted a portrait of Mussolini. He then went on to visit various places including São Paulo, Buenos Aires and Madrid before finally returning to Paris and eventually traveling onward to Stockholm. Eventually making his home in Hollywood, California – there he concentrated primarily on creating portraits of actresses like the one featured in MGM's screen adaptation of The Picture of Dorian Gray (1945). Perfect for anchoring a maximalist gallery wall yet equally striking as a stand-alone accent piece. Take into account that the colors on the items may vary depending on the type of lighting and the type of screen from which you see the images.
