About the Item
Stunningly executed in deep tones of cobalt blue, burnt sienna, oxblood and jet black, this depiction of a partially nude male youth standing at an open window at sunset was painted by Dunbar Beck in the 1930s. To American sensitivities at the time, the young man would have appeared very exotic, suggesting the Middle East or the southern Mediterranean. Beck was one of America's most accomplished and successful muralists, and he painted a WPA-sponsored mural in the post office in Danvers, Massachusetts, and a series of murals for the 1939-1940, New York World's Fair, among many others. He was also commissioned by Steinway to paint a series of scenes on a piano that the company gave to the White House during the Roosevelt administration.
