About the Item
Sensitively painted with a rich but subdued palette and dramatic lighting, this large painting of a male youth leaning on a long pole was made by Sigvard Mohn, a Minnesota-born artist of Norwegian extraction. Little is known about his career, and his works are rare. Drawings and paintings of nude figures were required by most art schools in the early 20th century, and since the man to the right in the shadows seems to be dressed in Spanish costume, the scene suggests that Mohn may have studied in Europe. Later the artist lived and worked in Brooklyn, and a painting of his is owned by the Salmagundi Club in Manhattan. The painting is signed on the reverse, and is stretched but not framed.
