About the Item

Oil on canvas painting depicting East 78th St in the upper East Side of Manhattan in New York City. James B. Duke House is noted on the left. Gorgeous depiction of the sun's touch and cool blue sky reflecting off the urban landscape. A cityscape subject turned into abstract with luminous play. The painting is signed and dated. The frame has a label from the Gallery Madison 90. The time of day in the painting are usual in his early pieces. Late in his career the time settings were mostly of dusk or dawn. For most of his career, Reist concentrated on architectural paintings inspired by cities where he lived and traveled including New York, Paris, Venice and Mexico City. His style is characterized by a focus on the interplay of color, shapes, and light to achieve emotional and atmospheric effect. He had his first of seven one-man shows at Gallery Madison 90 in 1970s, and has participated in group exhibitions at venues ranging from the Museum of Contemporary Hispanic Art and the “Red Windows” exhibition sponsored by Barney’s and Christie’s in 1994. In addition to private collections, his architectural paintings are in the collections of Paine Webber, General Mills Corporation, Howrey LLP at Citigroup Center, Cravath Swaine and Moore, Hardy Holzman Pfeiffer Associates, Pfizer Corporation, UBS, International Peace Academy, and the Milton S. Eisenhower Library at Johns Hopkins University.
