About the Item
Extraordinary artistically and historically, this oil painting by WPA muralist Sterling Smeltzer captures the dramatic moment when Marian Anderson sang before an enormous crowd in front of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., after the Daughters of the American Revolution refused to let her perform in Constitution Hall. Anderson was one of the leading sopranos of her day, lauded around the world, and was undoubtedly America's leading African American singer. Here, Smeltzer shows her singing at the feet of Lincoln, while the story of the rise of Black Americans in America is told to the left, beginning with life in Africa. The story continues with Black slaves handling bales of cotton at a dock, and continues with scenes of industry and urban life, hinting at the role Blacks were playing in industrial America. Smeltzer hailed from Altoona, Pennsylvania, and painted a WPA mural there, but spent much of his artistic life in California, living in Palos Verdes Estates on the edge of Los Angeles. He painted another WPA mural in Willoughby, Ohio, and spent years leading the industrial arts departments of two aviation companies -- Curtiss-Wright and North American Aviation. Painting is oil on masonite. Dimensions include the frame.
