About the Item
This painting by Mary Gehr (1910–1997) is an abstracted landscape, likely from the mid-20th century (1950s–1960s).
The composition is dominated by earthy ochres, yellows, and muted browns, with simplified geometric planes suggesting fields, buildings, and distant hills. The forms are flattened and fragmented into angular shapes, almost cubist in influence, while the warm palette evokes the dry, sun-drenched tones of late summer landscapes.
Gehr was active in Chicago and known for both painting and printmaking; her style often bridged abstraction and representation. This work fits well within the broader post-war American modernist movement, when artists were experimenting with semi-abstract landscapes influenced by Cubism, Fauvism, and the emerging Abstract Expressionist movement.
Gehr attended Smith College, but left before graduation to pursue a career in dance. She danced and toured with the Chicago Opera Ballet and with the notable Ruth Page dance company, the Page-Stone Ballet. In 1936, Gehr’s father died and she returned to Chicago and got a job working in advertising. She began classes at the Art Institute during this time, to aid her in her new career. The classes made Gehr realize she wanted to be an artist.
She had fifty-one, one-woman shows and illustrated over two dozen books during her career.
