A naturalistic oil painting depicting joseph, maria and the holy child in the barn of bethlehem. Oil painting on canvas with vigorous pastell colors. Framed with antique decorative gilded frame. Unsigned, Germany, Bavaria early 20th century. Measures: width: 23.62" (60cm) Height: 26.38" (67cm) Depth: 2.36" (6cm) Inside width: 17.91" (45.5cm), inside height: 20.47" (52cm) Oil Paintings with religious context have a long history. Usual they were commissioned by the church but since the 15th century also by private clients. Often they are utilized for the deep rooted tradition of the home altar 'Herrgottswinkel' where the families come together. The image of Mary is maybe the most common representation in Christian art.
