Massive Ralph Cahoon Painting of a New England Seaside Village Dock

About the Item

Titled Seaside Village Signed R. Cahoon (LR), Oil on Masonite, Dimensions: Sight: 29 1/4 inches x 39 inches. The painting of a traditional New England village square and docks is populated with Ralph Cahoon's typical characters of sailors and mermaids. The engaging scene is borrowed from an overmantel picture seen in Nina Fletcher Little’s American Decorative Wall Painting, 1700-1850 The picture shows a busy seaside village square with wood and brick buildings located alongside a dock Three large American ships flying the Stars and Stripes are at anchor while another ship is setting sail out to sea. Along the dockside are numerous sailors- some waving and other fishing. To the left a single sailor stands holding a large anchor and at his feet is a sheet with carvings for sale. Another sailor, peg-legged, is walking away from the dock wearing a bright red jacket and with a mermaid on his arm. To the front right is a sailor and a mermaid dancing a jig in front of a building with a sign reading Sailors Rest. In the center of the painting is a red building with signs reading Cahoon's Ship Store. Small groups of individuals are standing or walking in the square between the buildings. There is a large white church on the far side with a clock tower and a rooster weather vane. Behind the village is a stand of trees and in the distance on the horizon across the harbor is a spit of land with sandy beaches and various buildings including a church with a tall spire. The blue sky is most filled with white and gray clouds. This delightful genre scene captures the quiet activity of a traditional American farmyard, characterized by the artist's signature realistic style and serene composition. The scene depicts a flock of chickens foraging in golden straw outside a rustic stone and timber barn. A magnificent rooster stands alert on a hay mound, watching over hens of various breeds—white, speckled, and brown—while one chicken emerges from the dark interior of the farm building. In the background, a wooden rail fence separates the yard from a lush green pasture and distant woods, with small birds perching casually on the rails and pecking at the straw.
