Mid 19th Century Portrait of Two Gentlemen Examining a Terrestrial Globe

An unsigned canvas depicting two bearded ‘Renaissance’ gentlemen painted from the waist up in a loving posterior embrace. The painting is very likely English late 17th or 18th century. Relined well over a hundred years ago which suggests that the work may be 17th or 18 century. Presently in a contemporary, compatible frame. The canvas relining was done by John Peel who was active in London in the early 19thC. These elegant enamel plaques was painted in Limoges, a town in the south-west of France. While Limoges was highly regarded for its painted enamel wares in the 15th Century, in the following periods there was a decline in production. In the mid-19th Century, however, items like this pair began to be created, reviving the techniques of enamel painting that were perfected in the medieval period.
