About the Item
This mid-20th-century Vietnamese lacquer painting panel by Nguyễn Thanh Lê (1919–2003) is an elegant example of traditional Vietnamese sơn mài art, created by one of the leading lacquerists of the renowned Thanh Lê workshop in Saigon. Executed on a solid woodboard, the panel depicts a serene riverscape at dusk, showing the silhouettes of stilt houses and small boats drifting over calm water. The foreground appears in deep black, contrasted against a softly gradated silver-and-grey background for the river and a gold-and-grey sky above, creating the atmospheric depth characteristic of Thanh Lê’s work. The composition is signed in the lower left (see photo).
Nguyễn Thanh Lê was born in Long Xuyên in 1919 and trained at the Thu Dau Mot School of Fine Arts before co-founding the Thanh Lê lacquer atelier, long regarded as one of Vietnam’s most important lacquer workshops. His works are known for their layered technique, refined use of metallic powders and gold and silver leaf, and an ability to merge traditional Vietnamese subject matter with modern pictorial sensibilities. He remained active throughout the mid-20th century and continued producing lacquer art until his death in 2003.
The present panel was sourced in France and dates from the mid-20th century, consistent with the period of greatest activity of the Thanh Lê workshop. The woodboard is in very good structural condition with no cracks. The lacquer surface shows scratches due to age and handling as well as worn corners (typical for vintage lacquer pieces) without compromising the impact of the scene.
This is a fine and atmospheric example of Vietnamese lacquer art from one of its most recognized practitioners.
