About the Item
Painted by Franco-American artist Georges Shawe (1915–1995), this luminous landscape titled “Orchard” captures the tranquil beauty of the French countryside in springtime. Executed in oil on canvas, the composition reveals a sunlit orchard in full bloom, where flowering trees open onto a distant village crowned with a church steeple beneath a soft blue sky. Two women stroll along the path, adding a gentle narrative touch to the idyllic rural scene.
Shawe’s expressive brushwork and vibrant interplay of greens, blues, and ochres reflect the influence of Post-Impressionism and the lyrical tradition of the École de Paris. Born in France, Shawe lived and worked between Paris and the United States, exhibiting widely during the mid-20th century. His paintings, often devoted to pastoral landscapes and provincial architecture, celebrate light, serenity, and the harmony of nature.
The artwork is signed lower right corner, remains in excellent condition, and is presented in its richly carved giltwood frame of the period.
