A stunning midcentury abstract oil on board by the listed artist William Ernst Burwell (1911-1974). It is in its original gallery frame of painted softwood and the artists label verso. We have obtained several of the artists works from his studio. Condition is very good, the original frame has bumped corners but is generally good.
The painter and stage designer William Ernst Burwell, FRSA was born in Kingston-upon-Hull, Yorkshire. He studied at Hull College of Art and Brighton School of Art and showed at the RA, NEAC and elsewhere in Britain and overseas. From 1940-1946 he served with the Essex Regiment and was subsequently employed at Pinewood Studios. The many film sets of the 50s, 60s and early 70s on which he worked included 'Oliver Twist' and the 'Black Narcissus...
