Carl Busch was
born on June 27, 1905, in Münster.
1926
Worked as a stage painter at the Münster Theater.
1929
Rented his first studio, then became a member of the “Freie Künstlergemeischaft Schanze” (Free Artists' Association Schanze).
1942
Awarded the Gaukulturpreis (Gau Culture Prize). Worked as a war painter during World War II. Most of these war paintings are in the so-called “German War Art Collection,” which is not open to the public.
After the war, he creates the cycle “Die Zeit” (Time), which is almost exclusively in shades of gray and brown. The subject matter of the works is the war and the hardships of the immediate post-war period. The press in Münster describes the paintings as the “first art exhibition of burning contemporary relevance.” The cycle attracts national attention.
1960/70
Through thick applications of paint, his paintings increasingly take on structures and contours, in some cases an almost relief-like surface. His late work consists mainly of fruit still lifes and avenues.
