About the Item

This expressive mid-century painting was inspired by La Fille Romaine à la Fontaine (1875), a celebrated composition by French painter Léon Joseph Florentin Bonnat (1833–1922). The scene portrays a barefoot Roman girl leaning over a marble fountain to drink, her vivid skirt and billowing blouse rendered in warm Mediterranean tones. Signed “MLA” in the lower right, the artist skillfully captures Bonnat’s realism while infusing the work with looser brushstrokes and contemporary color contrasts. Bonnat, one of France’s most respected academic artists, was a professor and later director at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Known for his portraits of prominent figures and his rigorous yet liberal teaching approach, he bridged the gap between strict academic tradition and modern realism. This finely framed homage, presented in a carved giltwood frame with foliate motifs, is in excellent condition with rich, luminous hues. Measures: 23.5″ W x 27.5″ H.
