About the Item

Oil nude portrait by Lois Foley Whitcomb. Dimensions: 40" by 29 3/4" Condition: Very good vintage condition. Foley was born in Groton, Vermont, in 1937, and studied drawing and painting at art programs in Connecticut and New York, including the Art Students League in Manhattan. During a career that lasted roughly half a century, she mounted more than 100 solo and group shows in galleries around the world. In 1995, she was one of just four American artists to show work in the "50 Years Later" exhibit at the concentration camp in Dachau, Germany. Foley was also an activist. She belonged to the Women's Caucus for Art, serving as the Burlington chapter president from 1985 to '87, and she produced intricate woodcuts for the anti-nuke movement. Foley was known for large abstract works later in life (she died in 2000) but painted what seems to me like more serene, personal compositions depicting landscapes and nudes. I think that the combination of abstraction and figuration in her nudes, such as the gorgeous one available here, are the most sensitively rendered and stunning of her oeuvre. Her mastery of color is something to behold. Taking a closer look the neck and shoulder, one realizes the bravura of the composition. To dip the brush in dark ochre or vibrant orange or salmon pink and apply to the canvas, amidst a field of white is not for the faint of heart. Foley does so with abandon and the results are spectacular. Despite this display, the figure maintains his gravitas, his presence is palpable and his body solid. One is at the same time in the presence of him as well as the heavy strokes of paint of which he is made. A stunning midcentury work.
