About the Item

Make a grand statement with this exceptional and monumental oil on canvas painting, created in France circa 1790. Set in its original, deeply carved giltwood frame, the large composition depicts a lively pastoral scene on the banks of a river, believed to be the port of Marseille. The animated tableau captures a cross-section of late 18th-century life: elegantly dressed figures play cards and blow soap bubbles at a table, a lady reclines peacefully beside her loyal dog, a young mother with her child carries a basket of flowers, and nearby a jovial group exchanges conversation and laughter. Two mounted riders gallop past with a banner reading “Liberté de l’Escaut 1793”—a reference to the French Revolutionary campaign during the Battle of Raismes (also called the Battle of Condé or St. Amand), fought on May 8, 1793. The vivid inscription anchors the work within the fervent patriotic spirit of Revolutionary France, as the scene celebrates both daily joy and national pride. Executed with refined brushwork and soft atmospheric tones, the painting blends architectural depth and delicate human expression in the manner of late Rococo and early Neoclassical painters. The vast landscape background—featuring sailboats, city spires, and a gently clouded sky—enhances the painting’s sense of scale and movement. A possible artist’s signature appears faintly in the lower left corner. The monumental work is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, displaying rich coloration, nuanced detailing, and its original giltwood frame with ornate corner and center cartouches. Ideal for a hotel lobby, grand salon, or estate library, this impressive artwork is a museum-level statement piece that captures both history and beauty. Measures: 109" W x 94" H.
