Edma Morisot (1839-1921) Edma Morisot was born in 1839 in Valenciennes. Like her sister Berthe Morisot, she received a bourgeois education and discovered drawing, the piano... Encouraged by their teacher, Joseph Guichard, the two sisters went to the Louvre to copy the greatest masters. They met Henri Fantin-Latour who introduced them to many artists including Edouard Manet and Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot. On the advice of Fantin-Latour, they joined Corot in Ville d'Avray where they painted landscapes in the manner of the master. Edma also turned to portraiture. In 1863, convinced of the talent of his two pupils, Corot introduced them to his pupil, the landscape painter Achille Oudinot, whom he considered better able to perfect their training. These years of apprenticeship were a period of great complicity for Edma and Berthe, and they alternately acted as models for each other. In 1864, Edma and Berthe were admitted to the Salon des artistes français, a real consecration for women at the time... They exhibited there every year until 1869, when Edma married Adolphe Pontillon (1832-1894) and decided to abandon her artistic career in favor of her family life. Berthe continued to paint her: she was no longer "Edma" in the title of the paintings but "Mme Pontillon".
