About the Item
This detailed and highly-finished study by John Ramsey Conner for an allegorical painting depicts a relaxed grouping of nude figures executed in pale tones of ivory, mossy green and flesh was owned by Walter E. Baum, the renowned Bucks County, Pennsylvania landscapist. Baum himself posed nude for the adult male figure, accompanied by two female nudes one based on a professional model -- and one seated nude boy, seen in profile. The poses are refined and beautifully captured, clearly drawing on Renaissance and Classical models. The painting went from the Baum collection to Sigmund Kardas, Jr., who maintained collections in Spain and Trenton, New Jersey. Conner studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia, and won a medal for his work exhibited at the Sesquicentennial Exposition in Philadelphia in 1926. His works are in the collections of the Academy and the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. The painting is oil on canvas.

John Ramsey Conner
John Ramsey Conner was born in 1869. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia and won a medal for his work exhibited at the Sesquicentennial Exposition in Philadelphia in 1926. His works are in the collections of the Academy and the Corcoran School of the Arts and Design at GW in Washington, D.C. Conner died in 1952.
