About the Item

Painted with great verve and energy, this depiction of a circle of ice skaters circumnavigating a rink in Chicago -- perhaps the Lincoln Park Zoo rink -- was made in 1943 by John Winters, winning a prize in the Philadelphia area over a decade later. Winters was an integral part of the Chicago art scene in the 1930s and 1940s, and was the administrator for the WPA Illinois Art Project for several years. He painted murals -- such as “Lincoln at New Salem” in the Petersburg, Illinois post office -- and later moved to the Philadelphia area to serve as the chief artist and display director for the famed John Wanamaker department store. This painting is strongly reminiscent of the murals and paintings of the WPA period, which focused on work and everyday life in America. The medium is oil on canvas; the original frame is retained.
