About the Item
Vividly and boldly painted, this Art Deco depiction of a nude male angel, holding a torch aloft and transported by multi-colored, elaborate wings, was created by Henry Strachey in 1920. The figure is dramatically lit from one side and is presented against a night sky featuring a sliver of moon above purple and pink mountains. Strachey entitled it "The Morning Star," and his label -- including his address in Clutton, Bristol -- survives on the reverse. The artist is best known for a series of wall murals he painted at the Church of St Nicholas and the Blessed Virgin Mary in Stowey, as well as a portrait of Rudyard Kipling, but he also executed a series of large paintings for the Boy Scouts, and was interested in the male figure over many years. The painting is tempera on canvas board, mounted on wood board. It is signed and dated in the lower lefthand corner.
