About the Item
Highly sophisticated and striking in conception and execution, this study for an Art Deco bathroom mural depicts -- appropriately -- male and female nude figures swimming in an underwater scene with coral, a large clam shell and seaweed in one panel, and an outstretched octopus in the other. It was painted by Adelaide Briggs shortly after her studies at Cornell University, probably in the late 1930s or early 1940s. Here she used gouache and pastel on black paper, creating a bold, arresting design. Later, Briggs went on to pursue an important and successful career as a painter.
