An exquisite 19th-century European Orientalist oil painting on canvas, titled “The Odalisques” and signed lower right Raupp. This richly colored scene depicts two resting maidens by a window, one playing the baglama (a traditional stringed instrument) while the other listens in repose.
The setting combines the theatrical staging and exoticized interiors beloved of Romantic and Academic painters of the Orientalist movement. A red curtain frames the intimate space, while an arched loggia opens to a bright blue sky, evoking the luxurious seclusion of a harem or Mediterranean palace.
Executed with exceptional attention to drapery, costume, and facial expression, this work typifies the mid-19th-century European fascination with the “Orient” — a blend of imagined sensuality, leisure, and cultural curiosity. The painting has been expertly relined and remains in very good condition, with a luminous palette and fine detailing.
