About the Item
Oil painting on canvas depicting a deer with a hazelnut wood frame and antlers. Moritz Müller sen. The frame is composed of two panels: the thicker one at the front is embellished with carved leaves and intersects at the corners. It is carved to resemble tree branches. The thinner one at the back repeats the same motifs in a linear fashion. The whole is enriched by an interwoven deer antler motif that embraces the upper part of the frame, opening towards the top left. The painting is on canvas mounted on a wooden panel with orthogonal axes and depicts a mountain scene with a portrait of a deer in the foreground and mountains, a lake, and a forest behind it. The artist is Moritz Müller Sr. (Munich, 1841 – Munich, 1899), an animalier painter specializing in mountain and deer scenes. The signature at the bottom right reads M. Mûller Sr. Munich 1879. Sen. He distinguished his works from those of his son, the namesake, Moritz Müller the Younger (1868–1934), also an animalier painter. Munich, Germany, dated 1879.
