About the Item

One of a kind oil on canvas depicts a natural landscape, a riverbank, and the reflection of vegetation on its surface. It is the work of Antonio Cánovas del Castillo y Vallejo, a man with a remarkable cultural background, especially in the arts, and known primarily for his work as a photographer. However, in his role as a painter, Cánovas del Castillo adopted the pseudonym “Vascano” to sign most of his works. The work stands out for how, despite the overcast sky, the light filters into the landscape, creating an evocative and highly realistic atmosphere. The large, ornate frame emphasizes the importance of the piece. It,s a truly museum-quality work, a great opportunity!!! Antonio Cánovas del Castillo Vallejo (Madrid, 1862–1933) His uncle was the namesake Antonio Cánovas del Castillo, a prominent politician in 19th-century Spain. Proud of his work, he argued that photography was on par with paintings, in that both delight and excite. In addition to his photography, he studied Arts and Letters. A law graduate, he apprenticed with the painter Carlos de Haes, signing his works with the pseudonym "Vascano," as in "A Night at Sea" from 1888, owned by the Prado Museum, but currently on loan to another institution. He debuted as a professional photographer in 1899, participating in a competition organized by the magazine "La Ilustración Española y Americana," which featured photography and engravings. There he premiered "Los Esparteros," and the following year several of his photographs traveled to the Universal Exposition in Paris. In 1901, he won the prize of honor at the first photographic competition of the Madrid Photographic Society. In 1904, he established his Kaulak Gallery at number 4 Calle Alcalá. He signed his works with another pseudonym, Dalton Kalulak. There he photographed the upper classes of Spanish society and the monarchy. He used the most modern equipment of the time, both inside and outside the studio, and this was clearly advertised. He directed the magazine "La Fotografía" throughout its run, from 1901 to 1913. In his studio, he held an exhibition of portraits of women and men connected to the politics of the time, such as the writer Benito Pérez Galdós, Santiago Ramón y Cajal, Antonio Maura, and Eduardo Dato. It was quite an event in Madrid. On January 28, 1906, he gave a lecture entitled "Transformations of Photography" at the Ateneo in Madrid. In it, he traced his photographic knowledge as acquired during his travels to various countries. In 1918, he was awarded the Royal Order of Isabella the Catholic. In 1930, a sudden fire destroyed his studio, which was also his home at the time. He died three years later, on September 15, 1933.
