Painting of a quiet street bathed in the warm light of a setting sun, constructed from bold planes of orange, red, ochre and blue. Its style, chromatic treatment, and composition show strong similarities to Rue à Paris - the painting by Vosch held in the official heritage collection of the Brussels-Capital Region (Patrimoine.brussels, object no. 79325). It is highly plausible that both works were created around the same period and that they depict the same street.
Large oil paintings by Marc Vosch are exceptionally rare. He is best known for his many etchings, lithographs, and graphic works, which makes a monumental canvas such as this a particularly significant and desirable example of his painterly output. Vosch’s work is referenced in B.A.S. I and Twee eeuwen signaturen van Belgische kunstenaars (Piron).
Marc Vosch was a Belgian painter, printmaker (lithography), and watercolorist, born in Brussels in 1947 and passing away there far too early in 1989. He studied at the Uccle Academy under José Minne (1964–65), continued his training at the Brussels Academy with J. Ransy (1965–67), and later attended evening courses in Boitsfort under Somville (1967). His early exhibitions began in 1967 at Galerie Egmont in Brussels, marking the start of a career rooted in expressive color and humanistic observation.
Vosch was a gifted colorist. His paintings are distinguished by the impressive warmth of his palette - a controlled explosion of color that flourished within the structure of a strong, often architectural composition. While he frequently depicted lively urban and village scenes filled with figures, he also drew inspiration from his extensive travels across Nepal, Africa, the Middle East, and especially the Andes. These journeys shaped the vivid atmosphere and global sensibility that permeate his work.
Contemporary critics described his street and market scenes as “exceptionally lively sketches… with a color range reminiscent at times of Slabbinck, bringing us into a generous, sunlit atmosphere. Simple in line and structure, sober in drawing, built with large planes of light and bright color.” His style, though sometimes perceived as raw or primitive, emerged from an honest search for an authentic visual language.
Marc Vosch died young, at the age of 42, yet left behind a remarkable and intense body of work that combines the power of color and simplicity with a universal sense of human warmth.
