About the Item
Original signed acrylic painting on wood depicting a pair of Cardinals nesting by Alejandro Rangel Hidalgo. The painting was commissioned (and hence the name of the person that did) for a wall clock (still attached). The beautiful wooden frame suggests the splendid talent of the artist in woodwork besides his painting skills. Rangel was an artist, graphic designer, an artisan in wood furniture, and Scenographer for Opera
Ballet born in Colima, Mexico in 1923. His painting and design work has a highly distinctive style that reflects his views of nature and cultural themes related to Mexico. His painting style synthesizes leaves, flowers, fruits, insects, and birds along with backgrounds and plays of light and shadow, oftentimes used for decorating wood furniture manufactured by his family at their estate in Nogueras, Colima State. Much of his work involved nature but he never painted landscapes.
His best-known work involved the designing of Christmas cards for UNICEF and the New York Graphic Society, which gave him international recognition. The cards were designed starting in 1963 and achieved record sales for the United Nations’ children's agency. He died in 2000, The "Nogueras" former sugar cane Hacienda belonging to his family, became at his death The Rangel Hidalgo Studio
Museum.
