About the Item

An 18th-century Italian Renaissance oil painting of Our Lady of Peace, depicting Mary in red and green robes holding the Christ Child and a white dove. Against a dark, atmospheric background, the Virgin radiates serenity, symbolizing hope and divine protection. The Child—Jesus Christ, Prince of Peace—rests in her right arm, while her left hand gently holds the dove, a timeless emblem of peace. This religious artwork, rendered with rich colors and classical technique, captures both the maternal tenderness and spiritual authority of Mary. Also known by titles such as Mother of Peace, Queen of Peace, and Our Lady Queen of Peace, this portrayal resonates deeply with Catholic devotion. The composition suggests strong liturgical inspiration, reminiscent of devotional art commissioned for chapels and noble homes. The canvas measures 46 x 83 cm, while the ornate frame extends to 80.6 x 96.7 cm. The cult of the Lady: The traditional story holds that in the early 1500s in France, a certain Jean de Joyeuse presented the statue as a wedding gift to his young bride, Françoise e Voisins. The statue was known as the "Virgin of Joyeuse", and became a cherished family heirloom. Around the year 1588, Jean's grandson, Henri Joyeuse, joined the Capuchin Franciscans in Paris and brought the statue with him, where it remained for the next 200 years. With the olive branch in her hand and the Prince of Peace on her arm, the statue was called Notre Dame de Paix (Our Lady of Peace). In 1657 the Capuchin community erected a larger chapel to accommodate the growing number of faithful who sought her intercession. On July 9 that year, before a large crowd which included King Louis XIV, the papal nuncio to France blessed and solemnly enthroned the Virgin's statue. Pope Alexander VII would later designate this date for the Capuchin community to celebrate the feast of Our Lady of Peace This sacred painting is ideal for collectors of religious art, historians, or anyone seeking a meaningful piece with historical and devotional depth. Perfect for anchoring a maximalist gallery wall yet equally striking as a stand-alone accent piece. Take into account that the colors on the items may vary depending on the type of lighting and the type of screen from which you see the images.
