About the Item

Beautiful painting by Cuban American artist Jose Maria Mijares (Havana 1921- Miami 2004). Mijares had a long career which began in Cuba where be had his first exhibit in the early 1940s at the Capitolio of La Habana where he won his first prize. This important and early work that was created after he moved to Miami was purchased directly from the artist by the previous owner who was a friend of the father of the artist's host's in the United States after he fled from Cuba. Mijares was born in Havana Cuba and died in Miami, Florida which became his adopted home after fleeing Cuba in 1968. Mijares began his artistic studies in 1936, at the School of Art of San Alejandro in Havana, where his professors included Romanach, Menocal and Valderrama. Mijares credits one of his most influential professors, Fidelio Ponce with helping him develop his own style of expression. His first major showing was in 1944, at a national exhibition in Havana's Capitol building. There he won second prize with a painting titled La Alameda, English translation: The Boulevard. His style at the time was figurative but in the 1950s changed to his signature style, which he referenced as "concrete forms." Mijares taught for 2 years in San Alejandro after his win at the national exhibition. He resigned when Fidel Castro came to power and ultimately left Cuba in 1968, establishing himself in Miami. His geometric style then changed in its new surroundings. "I went back to figurative painting: people and landscapes." he's stated. Mijares has exhibited worldwide since the 1940s and even participated in a group show at the Museum of Modern Art in Paris in 1950.
