This is a pleasant still life, depicting a large yellow-ochre ceramic vase of lilac flowers of different colors:
white, light lilac, deep purple. Some clusters fell on the table, suggesting a natural and spontaneous effect.
The antique painting of lilac flowers fanning out filling the canvas. The painter uses a dense, textural brushstroke,
especially in the petals, which appear almost in relief. It is a typical technique of floral painting in the late 19th century and earlier
mid-twentieth century, in continuity with Impressionism. Art Nouveau. The picture conveys elegance and freshness.
The painting on canvas is signed at lower left Luc. Gilb. Darpy, French painter of still life, but mostly of flowers.
Lucien Gilbert Darpy (1875-1964) was a student of Géry- Bichard and Nel-Duchel.
He regularly exhibited at the "Salon des Artistes Français" and became a member in 1897.
Darpy specialized in still lifes, particularly flowers, often roses and fine floral arrangements.
Oil painting dresses with an original lacquered wooden frame.
The oil painting and frame are carefully and professionally restored.
