About the Item

Decorate a living room or grand entryway with this elegant pair of antique painted panels. Crafted in France circa 1830, each panel—measuring seven feet in height—is mounted within a carved giltwood frame and hand-painted on canvas stretched over a wooden back for stability. The central cartouches depict serene harbor scenes inspired by Claude-Joseph Vernet, the celebrated 18th-century French painter known for his luminous coastal landscapes. One panel captures a bright morning along the Mediterranean with sailing vessels near rocky cliffs, while the other shows a tranquil moonlit port with fishermen and distant ships. Surrounding each vignette, scrolling Rococo motifs, floral garlands, and acanthus flourishes are rendered in soft tones of blue and green against a warm ochre ground, accented by touches of pink, coral, and lavender. The composition blends classical grace with decorative exuberance, reflecting the Louis XV style’s enduring charm. Both panels are in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, displaying beautifully preserved colors and an appealing craquelure patina. Versatile and refined, these tall works may flank a mantel, doorway, or staircase, or be mounted above consoles for a dramatic focal point. Hooks on the reverse allow for easy installation. About Claude-Joseph Vernet (1714–1789): Born in Avignon, Vernet studied in Rome under marine painter Bernardino Fergioni. He became one of France’s foremost landscape artists of the 18th century, famed for his atmospheric harbor scenes, tempests, and moonlit vistas. His influence can be felt in countless decorative arts commissions across Europe. Measures: 34" W × 84" H each.
