About the Item

Charles Jean Auguste Escudier, French (1848-1923): A charming pair of oil on wood panel paintings by Escudier, one depicting a young girl coddling a lamb in a bucolic setting, the companion depicting a well-dressed young boy holding a bouquet of wildflowers and teasing a lamb. These well-painted Victorian genre scenes retain their original elaborate giltwood and gesso frames. Each bears a plaque "Escudier, Pair". The artist was well-known for painting romantic bucolic scenes often with children, beautifully dressed ladies and animals. The original gilt frames on these paintings are particularly well-preserved and elaborate.
