About the Item

A rare pair of large 19th-century oil portraits depicting Julius Ferdinand Dreysel and his wife Friedericke, prominent figures in the textile industry of Plauen, Germany. Painted around 1840, the works show Julius in a black jacket with grey vest and bow tie, and Friedericke in a high-necked black dress with an embroidered white blouse, seated against a red armrest. Julius was a cotton and embroidery manufacturer. After his early death in 1867, Friedericke continued the family business, an exceptional role for a woman of her time.
