About the Item
A magnificent pair of large oil paintings of cathedral city scenes by Augustus Bentley (British, fl. 1880–1910), each finely detailed work depicting bustling continental street scenes with figures before grand Gothic cathedrals, one showing Strasbourg Cathedral and the other Rouen Cathedral, both surrounded by timber-framed buildings and lively market activity. Painted with meticulous attention to architectural form and atmosphere, Bentley captures the golden afternoon light and the character of late 19th-century European civic life.
Both presented in their original richly carved and gilded swept frames. Signed A. Bentley lower left.

Artists Biography:
Born in Hadlow, Kent in 1834, he died at Leatherhead, Surrey in 1913, aged 78. He was trained at the Royal Academy of Arts during 1853 -57 where he won the medal for 'The best drawing from the Life' in both 1854 and 1857. He actively exhibited between 1854 and 1890. He had 30 paintings exhibited at the Royal Academy and specialised in Highland Cattle and general genre paintings. He was also an accomplished portrait painter.
He has paintings in the permanent exhibitions at Sunderland, York and Leicester Art Galleries and also in the Long Room at Lords Cricket...
