Signed "Paul Tillier". Oil on canvas. Original frame. The French painter and genre painter Paul Prosper Tillier was born on 2 November 1834 in the small village of Le Boupère in the Vendée département near Nantes. Although he grew up in a very rural environment, Tillier was already interested in the fine arts in his youth. Through a painting and drawing school in Nantes, Tillier came to Paris in the late 1840s, where he quickly found his way into artistic circles. There he met the painter Léon Cogniet (1794-1880), who taught at the École des Beaux-Arts. Tillier became the master pupil of Cogniet, whose style, which was completely in the spirit of Neoclassicism and Romanticism, became formative for him. Cogniet trained Tillier's fine powers of observation. The apprenticeship also had a formative effect on his choice of subjects: Tiller's work is extensive, including landscapes and genre scenes, but his focus was on portraiture. His portraits of women deserve special mention: He has repeatedly created portraits that do not depict an individual person, but are to be understood as allegories or ideal types. This work also represents such a type: The depicted person remains nameless, more important than her person is the thought of an ideal embodiment of the idea of beauty. Tillier thus stands entirely in the tradition of classicism, for which a successful work of art reproduces an (antique) model as well as possible. His work "Confidence" from 1875, which can be found in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Troyes, became famous. Paul Prosper Tillier worked as a freelance artist throughout his life and died on 10 October 1915 in Paris.
